Ellie closed her eyes as they left the airport, content to hold her daughter. She reached over and touched Maria, the sister that she never had, and a dear friend. Her friend was, in fact, another parent to Stacey, and Ellie knew that Maria loved Stacey as much as she would a child of her own. Maria took her hand and gently held it.
The trip from the airport seemed to take just seconds. When Ellie saw her house, it seemed as if she had been away for months rather than just four days.
Meredith opened the door for her, and she got out still holding her daughter. She walked up the driveway and didn't look back. Maria was right behind her, talking excitedly.
Meredith started to follow, giving Sergeant Patterson a concerned glance.
"It's clean," Patterson said, waiting by the car. Meredith stopped. Two uniformed officers entered the driveway from the pool area.
The heat from the driveway was making him nauseous. He walked to the open front door of the house and entered the cool interior. Ellie was on the far side of the living room, holding Stacey with one arm, her other arm around Maria. Meredith held up a hand and said, "I'll see you later." Ellie nodded and leaned her head against Stacey.
He walked outside and got into the car with the homicide detective and they drove toward downtown Phoenix. Meredith liked the dry heat of the Southwest, but the lack of sleep was taking its toll. He fought to keep his eyes open in the brightness of the afternoon. Patterson woke his passenger as he pulled up in front of the Sheraton.
"We need to talk," Meredith said, struggling to get out of the car.
"Later. Get some rest. Pick you up at seven in the morning. You can buy me breakfast."
Meredith forced himself to take a shower, and fell into bed. When he woke up at 4 A.M., his knee was stiff and painful, and his bladder was screaming. He had slept almost thirteen hours.
Hell of a way to start the Fourth of July.
And the terror was just beginning.
